Woman complains of dowry harassment by cop's family

CHENNAI: The daughter-in-law of a police head constable attached to the Government Royapettah Hospital police station on Friday lodged a complaint against her husband and in-laws for harassing her for dowry.

The complainant, Geetha Paneerselvam (21), was married to Sathish Kumar, son of head constable Somasundaram. Geetha alleged that Somasundaram had sexually assaulted her in her husband's house and that her husband had not bothered to help her. Other types of harassment continued and Geetha moved in with her parents one-and-half years ago.

"However, they kept on harassing me in the name of dowry. My parents had given them 40 sovereigns of jewellery and Rs 3 lakh in cash at the time of my marriage. But my husband said that I had only brought Rs 2 lakh and demanded more. My parents-in-law, sister-in-law and husband harassed me. My father-in-law used to sexually harass me," Geetha said in her complaint.

City police commissioner R Sekar forwarded Geetha's complaint to the all-women police station in Royapettah and the police arrested Tamizharasi, sister-in-law of Geetha. Somasundaram, Satish Kumar and his mother Lalitha are absconding.
