The Orissa Assembly was adjourned till Monday after Opposition blocked all proceedings on Friday demanding the resignation of the deputy Speaker Prahlad Dora.
Dora's daughter-in-law Smita Majhi has accused him and her husband of physical and mental torture and has filed a criminal case against them, charges the deputy Speaker says are baseless.
Orissa Assembly failed to do any business on Friday and had to be adjourned till Monday after the Opposition demanded the immediate resignation of the Deputy Speaker Prahlad Dora after his daughter-in-law filed a case of dowry torture against him and his son.
Twenty-three-year-old Smita Majhi had married Dora's son Chinmay barely six weeks ago. But on Thursday she walked into the Jeypore police station and filed an FIR alleging physical and mental torture by the Dora family.
"My father-in-law, husband and mother-in-law have subjected me to physical and mental torture for more dowry. My husband has abused me sexually. He has another wife," said Smita Majhi, Dora's daughter-in-Law.
Smita in her FIR has said her husband has another wife and that she had been first cheated and then tortured in the full knowledge of her father-in-law. But the deputy Seaker Prahlad Dora has rejected the allegations.
"The allegations are baseless, defamatory, derogatory I belong to a scheduled tribe and so the question of dowry doesn't arise," said Prahlad Dora, Deputy Speaker, Orissa.
The police are yet to take any action in the matter but pressures are mounting on the deputy Speaker to resign.
The House had lost a week over alleged sexual harassment by the Speaker in the last budget session and is likely to remain paralysed this time around until Dora resigns.
