Customs, excise officials arrested during rave party

MUMBAI - About 40 persons, including two-dozen customs and central excise officials and a dozen bar girls, were arrested early on Wednesday at a 'rave party' in Khandala, about 100km from here.
According to police sources, the officials who were arrested included four senior customs officials from the Mumbai international airport.
The organiser of the party and some musicians were also arrested in the raid. Thousands of Mumbai residents head for the twin hill-stations of Khandala and Lonavalva every weekend.
Many of them attend private parties at bungalows that are rented out for the purpose. With the Maharashtra government having shut down dance bars, several unemployed dancers have joined 'escort services' and accompany customers to the hillstations.
Last year, over a hundred youngsters were arrested by the police at a farm house near Pune, where a rave party was allegedly being held.
The rural police conduct these high-profile raids, where they are accompanied by local television channels, hoping to grab the limelight, and the attention of higher-ups.
They usually portray the raids as a major bust-up of an illegal gathering and claim that organised gangs and drug pushers are also involved.
However, they fail to rustle up the necessary evidence and are forced to release the arrested persons as most of the charges are bailable and are not serious offences.
In Wednesday's raid, the only major charge that the police could file against the participants was consuming alcohol without having the necessary permits.
Courts here also take a dim view of charges of prostitution filed by the police against consenting adults, especially those not found misbehaving in public.
Organisers of private parties here also accuse some officials of ordering raids when they are unable to meet their demands for bribes.
